Can 2019 Be the Year of the Eco-Friendly Filler?

Injectable treatments, such as dermal fillers and Botox, are among the most popular cosmetic procedures for both women and men.

Over the past several years, this demand has been met with increased product options and treatment versatility.

Now, a new activated silk dermal filler is positioned to enter the aesthetic market as an all-natural and biodegradable injectable treatment.

So, will 2019 be the year of the eco-friendly filler?  Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Activated Silk Dermal Filler?

Manufactured by Silk Medical Aesthetics Inc., this silk-based filler is all-natural, biodegradable, and designed to be injected into the skin to treat facial wrinkles, volume loss, acne scars, and aging hands.

While FDA-approved dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are comprised of a hyaluronic acid gel, a silk dermal filler contains pure silk from the thread of silkworm cocoons.

This material is then suspended in liquid to make it readily injectable.

What Are the Proposed Benefits of This Eco-Friendly Filler?

This eco-friendly filler boasts that its entire manufacturing process is all-natural, without any chemical preservatives.

Additionally, Silk Medical Aesthetics founder Greg Altman reports that one of the filler’s main advantages is its ability to integrate into the skin’s collagen network and provide results that look and feel very natural.

Plus, the product is intended to provide more precision in its application and better control of associated swelling.

Finally, silk dermal filler’s biocompatibility may also be able to limit redness and inflammation following injection.

How Would It Differ from Current Filler Products?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are frequently used to enhance facial contours, add volume and fullness, plump and shape lips, lift skin, and fill wrinkles and folds.

Because hyaluronic acid is a substance that’s naturally found in the skin, they are extremely safe with virtually no chance of allergic reaction.

While silk activated dermal filler is all-natural, aesthetic experts note that it is possible for patients to be allergic to natural substances, such as silk sutures. However, they are cautiously optimistic that the composition of the filler will be different and less likely to induce a reaction.

Plus, this eco-friendly filler may last three-to-24 months (compared to six-to-12 months for the average HA filler), but additional data is needed to determine its longevity.
