PRP or SMP – How Do I Decide?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) and Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) are two of the most popular nonsurgical treatments for hair loss. As such, when considering hair restoration options many people wonder: PRP or SMP – How do I decide?

Continue reading to learn the benefits of each treatment and how they can be paired to create full and natural-looking hair.

What Is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma and is a non-surgical treatment that can help women and men regrow their own hair.

During treatment, a sample of blood is taken from the patient’s arm and placed in a device called a centrifuge. The centrifuge then spins the blood in order to separate platelet-rich plasma, chock full of growth factors and proteins, from other blood components.

Next, platelet-rich plasma is deposited into a syringe and injected into the scalp. This is done to activate dormant hair follicles and extend the active phase in the growth cycle.

Following a series of PRP treatments, hair will regenerate and grow thicker, fuller, and longer.

What Is SMP?

SMP stands for Scalp Micropigmentation and is a noninvasive treatment for hair loss and thinning. It involves implanting ink in the scalp in order to create a series of precisely-placed and layered dots.

When administered to areas of thinning, this creates the illusion of thicker, fuller hair. It can also be used to improve the hairline or fill-in patches on a shaved head.

PRP or SMP – How Do I Decide?

Now that you are familiar with both of these hair restoration treatments, you may be wondering: PRP or SMP – How do I decide?

The truth of the matter is that you don’t have to necessarily choose one or the other! In fact, because PRP cannot regrow all hair, SMP is often used to fill-in spots and enhance overall outcomes.

What’s more, SMP will not impede additional hair growth. Nor will it be negatively impacted by new growth from PRP maintenance treatments.
